Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey. In many ways Benin is the perfect introduction to Africa. A land of pristine beaches and bountiful wildlife and hospitable inhabitants
The birthplace of Voodoo and one of the many departure points for more than 8 million people who were forced to leave the continent as slaves. Benin is steeped in a rich and complex history still very much in evidence today. Small in size but nit stature, Benin has something to suit every interest, be it the wild landscape of the north, the bustling metropolis for the south or the shared religion and history that bind the country and its people.
A visit to this small, club-shaped nation could therefore not be complete without learning about spirits and fetishes and the Afro-Brazilian heritage of Ouidah, Abomey and Porto Novo.
